End of mystery! The UFC’s famous ‘Ilha da Luta’ had its location announced by the organization on Tuesday (09). The venue for the events will be the island of Yas, in Abu Dhabi. In the country of the United Arab Emirates, Ultimate will host four games in June, including UFC 251 and three shows from the Fight Night series.
The ‘Ilha da Luta’ schedule will start with UFC 251, on June 11th, and will continue with cards being played on Wednesday, 15th; Saturday, the 18th; and Saturday, the 25th.
To accommodate existing public health guidelines, DCT Abu Dhabi will create a security zone of around 25 km 2 within Yas Island that includes an arena, hotel, training facilities and restaurants. This security zone will be open only to UFC athletes and their coaches, UFC team and event staff, and Yas Island employees. They are necessary to ensure the operation of the venue.
“Our partnership with the UFC, now in its second year, has proven to be one of our most successful initiatives in the recent period. Thanks to your commitment and cooperation, we are proud to announce that Abu Dhabi will host the first “Fight Island” in history, marking the long-awaited return of the UFC to the world stage.”, Said His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, president of DCT Abu Dhabi.
“We work alongside government agencies in Abu Dhabi to ensure that this historic event is held to the highest safety standards for athletes, coaches, the entire UFC team and our community. This year, Abu Dhabi has successfully proven its ability to handle all challenges and promote the well-being of its visitors and residents. Today, we are here to show the best that our capital has to offer, as we look forward to opening our doors once again to the world”, he added.
Dana White celebrates Fight Island.
“We had the idea of having fought on a “Fight Island” because we needed a destination to host international events during the pandemic. Abu Dhabi has been an incredible venue for activities for the past ten years and is the perfect place for these shows. The infrastructure we are building will be a unique experience in the fighters’ lives – from the arena and training facilities to the octagon on the island. It will be an experience that none of us will forget. I can’t wait to have incredible fights on Yas Island,” said UFC president Dana White.
Return to Abu Dhabi after UFC 242
In 2019, UFC and DCT Abu Dhabi entered into an innovative five-year partnership to bring UFC to the Emirate. UFC 242: Khabib vs. Poirier, the first event held within the new company, attracted more than 14,000 fans to Yas Island in September last year. The deal to bring UFC FIGHT ISLAND to Abu Dhabi is an expansion of the original five-year partnership between UFC and DCT Abu Dhabi.
